HAPPY SPRING EQUINOX! Known in Japan as Shunbun no HAPPY SPRING EQUINOX!
Known in Japan as Shunbun no hi (春分の日) today marks what many dub the first official day of the season of spring. Cherry blossoms have be begun to burst forth in Japan and while Colorado will still see some snow and chilly days the warming sunshine is bringing the first of the season's local flowers with it. Look carefully and you'll find the burgeoning leaves of tulips, daffodils and petite purple crocus. The flowers between here and Japan may be worlds apart but we are all celebrating the return of life at winter's end!

Colorado is still tucked into winter with some of Colorado is still tucked into winter with some of our heaviest snows in the month or two to come but in the Tea world we are always looking ahead. With the passing of Setsubun at the beginning of the month we are saying goodbye to deep winter and beginning to incorporate early spring motifs into our sweets, utensils and poetic musings. In Japan, plum blossoms (ume) and bush warblers (uguisu) are popular signifiers for the seasonal shift. Creating anticipation with delicate petals and lively colors.
Here in the mountains you may want to keep at least one tsutsujawan ("tall" teabowl) in your lineup to give guests a little added warmth until spring begins stateside!

Also known as Hina Matsuri or the "doll festival" this tradition celebrates health and growth for girls. It is often a tradition that also reminds many of impending spring through the colorful doll displays, special pink and green sweets (hichigiri) and sometimes in Japan, the very first cherry blossoms begin to emerge around this time.
